Viva la Transicion

The tram, a modified ČKD Model Tatra K2YU, produced in the famous Czechoslovakian tram factory in 1977, was specifically designed for Sarajevo on the basis of Eastern Europe’s favorite K2 tram. Bought from a state not in existence anymore, by a state and for a state also long gone, this tram still operates Sarajevan railroad, which is famous for its simplicity and almost perfectly round shape.

Both Czechoslovakia and Bosnia and Herzegovina have been through abrupt changes after the fall of the Berlin Wall. When thinking about the modalities of their transitions, one must think about their differences and their similarities. What are the reasons for such different transitions, one peaceful, one utterly violent? These are all questions to ask while looking at the old K2YU slowly making its circles along Sarajevo’s ephemeral cityscape.
